Be my Valentine
Author: Magdalena Kořínková
Christmas is behind us, yet spring still feels a long way off. So, how can we make the most of these cold winter days? We all know that if anything truly warms the heart, it’s love. In this article, we’ll be focusing on love and the February celebration dedicated to it – St Valentine’s Day. Even if you’re not a fan of “American holidays” and think of May rather than February as the time to celebrate love, we believe you’ll discover some fascinating insights here, along with inspiration for original gift ideas for both ladies and gentlemen.
Many holidays, as it turns out, have connections to love. Spring, originally pagan fertility festivals, today’s Easter, May Day, Christmas, and even Children’s Day or Mother’s Day – all these celebrations are embraced because we love. And for the same reason, we give gifts to our loved ones. Besides the magical May Day, an “official day” to celebrate love is February 14th, on which Valentine is celebrated.
It may not surprise you to learn that during the time we celebrate St Valentine’s Day, the pagan festival of fertility, Lupercalia, was originally celebrated. Like many other pagan festivals, Lupercalia was Christianised in the 5th century, and since then, this holiday has been officially celebrated. If you thought it was a modern invention for a society lacking things to celebrate, you’d be mistaken.
Who was Saint Valentine?
Let’s take a look into history. Although Emperor Claudius II in 3rd century Rome issued a ban on new unions, Valentine defied this by secretly marrying couples in love. The reason for banning marriage was the belief that love distracted young men, thereby impairing their military abilities. But love triumphs over war, as evidenced by the fact that Valentine became the most popular saint in England and France after his death.
The Heart as a Symbol of Love...
...has been used since the 13th century. When better than on February 14th (or May 1st, or really any day) to gift a loved one a piece of jewellery with this symbol? If you’d like to express your feelings with symbols other than hearts, you might consider the infinity symbol, an arrow, doves, or roses. Or you could express your feelings through the choice of a precious stone. Love is symbolised by stones like pink rose quartz, sapphire, tourmaline, or diamond, red stones such as ruby or carnelian, as well as topaz, jade, chrysoprase, emerald and amethyst.
“I’m Not Really Into Valentine's Day...”
Even if this holiday isn’t your cup of tea, it’s best not to ignore it. Most women, including those who claim they don’t celebrate Valentine’s, secretly (or openly) expect at least flowers or a small gift – according to surveys, this supposedly disdained holiday is celebrated by two-thirds of Czechs, with more than a third seeing it as a suitable day for a proposal! So if a gentleman appears on February 14th with a sparkly gift box, he can hardly go wrong.
