Silver bowl with monogram - Meriden Britannia Co.
An early 20th century circular richly decorated silver bowl by the Meriden Britannia Company, USA. The bowl is hollow, made from double solid silver sheet. Engraved with a calligraphed monogram 'DBM'(?). The item is accompanied by a certificate from the Assay Office.
The Meriden Britannia Company was founded in 1847 in Meriden, Connecticut, USA. It became, for a time, the largest silver company in the world. In 1895, the Meriden Britannia Co. purchased Wilcox & Evertsen of New York and began producing a fine line of hollowware in sterling silver. This production was soon transferred to Meriden and continued after the company became part of the International Silver Company.
