Icon - Mandylion
Icon depicting a Mandylion – shows the frontal face of Christ on a pleated veil. Byzantine-style face, long wavy hair parted in the middle, short sparse beard and forked chin. It is a tempera painting on a wooden board. The painting is partially damaged (see photo).
The 19th-century item comes with a sales and export certificate issued by the Czech National Heritage Institute.
The Mandylion, also known as the Image of Edessa, is a holy relic venerated as an acheiropoieton (an image not made by human hands). It consists of a cloth bearing the alleged imprint of the face of Jesus Christ.
