Gorham Manufacturing Company is one of America's largest producers of sterling silver. The company was founded in 1831 by Jabez Gorham in Rhode Island and has since expanded. They are mainly known for making silver cutlery, but also thimbles, combs, jewelry and other small items. Gorham's descendants gradually mechanized production methods and expanded the facilities. From the mid-19th century onwards, they were regularly inspired by the European market. By the 20th century, the company's position was strong enough to buy up other companies, such as the Whiting Manufacturing Company and others.
