Porcelain brooch - 1st half of the 19th century
Rectangular brooch made in the first half of the 19th century from painted porcelain and yellow 14k gold. The gold frame is richly embossed.
The motif on the porcelain plate comes from a popular and frequently copied painting of Jesus and Saint John the Baptist with a shell (Los Niños de la concha in the original), painted between 1670 and 1675 by the Spanish painter Bartolmeo Esteban Murillo (1618-1682).
The pin was probably added to the jewel at a later date, and there is also an Austro-Hungarian hallmark used between 1866 and 1921.
