SOLD - Gold necklace with a filigree Maltese cross
The necklace consists of a short (39.5 cm) thick chain and a pendant in the shape of a Maltese cross. It is made of 14k gold, which is additionally gilded with ducat gold. The jeweler used the filigree technique on the cross, along with appliqués in the shape of flowers and colored enamel.
The chain is stamped with an Austro-Hungarian hallmark on the clasp and less clearly on the loop of the cross. The necklace has original case.
This type of jewelry is typical for Portugal – especially the conical filigree, which was a specialty of goldsmiths from Gondomar. A similar piece is in the collection of the British Victoria and Albert Museum, which dates the piece to between 1865 and 1870.
