SOLD - Baroque glass goblet - VIVAT LEOPOLDVS
Baroque goblet, probably made on the occasion of the coronation of Emperor Leopold II in Prague in 1791.
The glass is clear with a manganese (pink) tint. The thick-walled, funnel-shaped bowl is decorated with an engraved motif of a double-headed eagle bearing a crown, sceptre, orb, and sword — the regalia symbolizing imperial power and sovereignty. The decoration is complemented by the inscription “VIVAT LEOPOLDVS” and a floral motif.
The goblet is in excellent condition for its age — without chips or cracks.
Just as we toast on festive occasions today, people in the early modern period also raised their glasses to health — often using glass goblets. Special glasses known as vivat goblets were used for this purpose — designed specifically for toasts. A collection of such glasses from the Brandenburg region can be seen here.
