Antique Trinket Boxes: Unique and Timeless Gift Ideas
Author: Martin Cinolter
Perhaps some of you still haven’t gathered all the Christmas presents and tokens of affection for your loved ones. How about solving it this time with an empty box in wrapping paper? You might be shaking your head, thinking: “What a crazy idea to give someone an empty container!” But if the box is an antique, it could actually be a unique gift!
If you’re looking for a unique gift idea to show how much you care about the recipient, I have a suggestion for you. An antique box, trinket box, powder compact, cigarette case, or even a snuffbox could be the perfect gift to make a lasting impression. What’s more, a glass trinket box with a brass lid doesn’t have to serve solely as a gift itself—it can also be an original packaging for another present, such as a ring, the key to a new home, or even a handwritten note with a declaration of love. The only limit is your imagination and creativity.
In the good old days, boxes and trinket containers of all kinds were considered stylish and essential items of daily life, reflecting both the personality of their owner and the craftsmanship of their maker. A silver cigarette case, known as the "cigar bag," was a must-have accessory for gentlemen in the days when smoking was considered sophisticated. Snuff tobacco, also popular at the time, required its own special container called a "snuffbox," often crafted from alpaca or silver.
Various types of boxes and containers were also essential accessories for ladies’ handbags and dressing tables. These included powder compacts or artistically designed boxes for rings, medicines, or other small yet important items, often inherited from great-grandmothers. Different materials were favoured in various historical periods, such as glass, enamel, silver, brass, gold, ivory, or combinations of these materials.
Whether you leave the box empty or fill it with a symbolic gift, it is sure to be a success—not just at Christmas!
