Favourite Jewellery for this Summer
Author: Magdalena Kořínková
Summer offers us a wonderful opportunity to showcase bold, colourful, and large jewellery pieces, which look simply stunning on tanned skin and might often be overlooked during the rest of the year. Whether you're a lover of minimalism or adore bold and striking jewellery, the right piece can truly help you stand out in summer. Let's take a look not only at how to choose the perfect summer jewellery but also how to care for it so that the shining sun, sweat, seawater, or pool water don’t diminish its beauty.
Take a few of your favourite pieces on holiday – or perhaps those you don’t wear often – and set off to explore the world with them. If you own rare and valuable items, it’s best to store them in a safe or a safety deposit box before leaving, and make sure your sparkling collection is insured for travel. The jewellery you take with you should be kept in the hotel safe when not worn.
TIP
The golden rule is: jewellery is the last thing you put on before leaving and the first thing you take off when you return. If you put on jewellery and then apply sunscreen, perfume, or makeup, it may lose its sparkle and shine, and you risk damaging it.
For Those Who Love the Sea
If you're among the lucky ones heading to the sea this year, be sure to bring your pearl jewellery. Seawater, from which pearls originate, actually benefits and revitalises them, so you can enjoy the waves without worry. However, don’t take them into the pool – not even a spa pool – as chlorine and thermal water can damage pearls.
Be cautious with sunlight – pearls can only handle it in moderate intensity. Before storing them in a jewellery box in the evening, clean them carefully with a cloth, as sweat or sunscreen can harm them. Also, be mindful when storing pearl jewellery – pearls are soft and can scratch easily, even against each other. But with proper care, they’ll reward you. At the beach, sipping a cocktail or iced coffee, you'll look elegant and timeless.
Gold Shining Like the Sun
Gold and sunshine go hand in hand! Gold absorbs the sun's rays, and it doesn’t require much maintenance. However, if your jewellery includes a gemstone, take note. What works for gold might not suit gemstones or semi-precious stones. For instance, sunlight won’t harm diamonds but can dull zircons over time. If you're unsure whether your favourite jewellery is suitable for a beach holiday, we're happy to advise you.
In the Colours of the Ocean Waves
Turquoise jewellery looks amazing by the turquoise sea. Can you picture yourself rocking the waves with a turquoise necklace around your neck? Oh, the Instagram photos! But let’s be practical – turquoise is quite delicate and doesn’t handle sudden temperature changes well. Avoid exposing it to the shift from a sun-soaked beach to the cool sea. Instead, wear it on an evening city stroll – it will look stunning on sun-kissed skin. And one more tip: direct sunlight can fade turquoise, which is something you’ll want to avoid.
Like a Sunset
Like pearls, corals also love to return to the sea, their place of origin. But, like turquoise, coral jewellery should not be exposed to sudden temperature changes or direct sunlight. Instead, wear them for an evening promenade, dinner, or a yacht outing.
If corals have stolen your heart, we strongly recommend choosing antique coral jewellery. Today, coral harvesting is controversial due to environmental and ethical concerns, meaning corals will become increasingly scarce and their value will rise over time.
Even though this summer may be unusual for many of us, and some might not even make it to the sea, why not reminisce about ocean waves with jewellery that shares a connection to the sea? Corals, pearls, turquoise, gold… just close your eyes, and you can almost hear the surf.
