Silver footed bowl - Towle
An oval bowl on a foot made of sterling silver (Ag 925/1000) by the American silversmith company Towle at the turn of the 19th and 20th century. The smooth ribbed surface of the bowl is framed by embossed decorated edges. On one side we find an engraved monogram.
The fineness of the precious metal is confirmed by a certificate from the Czech Assay Office.
Towle & Jones was founded in 1690. Its origins trace back to the Moulton family, who settled in Newbury, Massachusetts.
After six generations of silversmiths in the Moulton family, Joseph Moulton sold the company in 1857 to two of his father’s apprentices—Anthony Francis Towle and William P. Jones. Together, they established the firm Towle & Jones Co.
In 1873, Anthony Francis Towle’s son joined the company, leading to a name change to A.F. Towle & Son. Later, the company name was established as Towle Silversmiths.
