Faience corbel with chinoiserie - year 1748
The pear-shaped corbel is made of blue and white faience with chinoiserie motifs. The lid and the edges of the object are made of tin, which is marked with the engraved date ‘1748’ and the monogram ‘CS’. Similar corbels come from Delft or Frankfurt production.
Due to its age, the vessel has been repaired in several places (lid, bottom) and bears signs of use - such as scratches, cracks and abrasions.
Chinoiserie is an artistic style that imitates or is inspired by Chinese (and generally East Asian) art and culture, but originated in Europe, mainly in the 17th-18th centuries.
