Author: Magdalena Kořínková
The talented Czech engraver Ludwig Moser always worked with traditional glassmaking techniques. Thanks to his attention to detail and artistic talent, Moser crystal is found in the most prestigious places and in collections of people with refined taste. The Moser brand has captivated the world for over 160 years and remains a standout in the realm of crystal craftsmanship. Here, we bring you the story of Ludwig Moser and his brand, which has become a global icon.
Ludwig Löwi Moser
… was born on 18th June 1833 in Karlovy Vary as the firstborn son of Lazar Moser and Henrietta Moser, née Becher. He trained as a glass engraver under Andreas Mattoni and began working independently in 1855. Initially, he engraved monograms, coats of arms, ornaments, and inscriptions on purchased glasses or spa goblets. Two years later, in 1857, he founded his own company.
Hard work pays off...
Moser's small engraving workshop and glass shop faced a shortage of raw glass. He resolved the issue by founding his own glassworks in Meierhöfen, a move that proved to be highly successful. Just six years later, by 1873, the Moser company was flourishing and had become the court supplier of glassware not only for Emperor Franz Joseph I but also for Persian Shah Mozaffar ad-Din (1901) and English King Edward VII (1908). Additionally, Moser supplied royal courts in Norway, Bulgaria, and Spain. Many entrepreneurs would have been satisfied with such success, but not Moser. His company expanded to include representatives in New York, London, Paris, and St. Petersburg.
Made in Czech
What lies behind the fame of Czech "glass of kings"? Handcrafted production from start to finish, including grinding, polishing, engraving, painting, and gilding with 24-carat gold. Lead-free, hand-blown crystal. A focus on skilled, well-compensated artists, glassmakers, grinders, and engravers.
Moser is one of the key Czech brands and a symbol of precise quality and luxury. The brand's design and craftsmanship led to its inclusion in 2011 in the French Comité Colbert, alongside global icons such as Dior, Hermès, Chanel, and Cartier.

In the hands of the most significant
Moser primarily produces glassware collections for all occasions, including the renowned Splendid set. This set was presented as a wedding gift to Princess Elizabeth by President Edvard Beneš in 1947. Each unique piece of the set bore her initials. Moser crystal vases, created to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Czech Republic, also adorn Prague Castle.
You should not miss the Ludwig chandelier, which took nearly a year to complete and involved the work of 40 people. Weighing 200 kg, it features 133 topaz-coloured crystals hanging from arms gilded with 24-carat gold. The Copenhagen set graces the tables of many royal families, and Moser is also known worldwide for its awards for the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.
