Mother's Day is one of the most celebrated days worldwide, right after Christmas and Easter. The way and day on which mums are celebrated varies across countries. Following the lead of the United States, the Czech Republic chose to celebrate on the second Sunday of May. In the UK, however, mums are celebrated in March, while in Thailand, Mother’s Day takes place in August, on the birthday of Queen Sirikit.
The earliest celebrations of Mother’s Day date back to ancient Greece, where alongside fertility worship, homage was paid to the goddess Rhea—the mother of gods. In the Czech Republic, this tradition was revived at the beginning of the 20th century, and in 1923, Mother’s Day became an annual part of May. Alice Masaryková, the first lady, was a significant advocate of Mother’s Day.
