SOLD - František Kaván - Trosky in Winter - 120,000 Kč

This winter landscape, featuring the iconic silhouette of Trosky Castle, is masterfully captured in oil on cardboard by the prominent Czech realist František Kaván (1866–1941) during the 1920s. The work, measuring 39.7 x 51.5 cm, is signed by the artist in the lower left with a dedication, set in a period-style frame, and its authenticity is documented by an expert opinion from the art historian PhDr. Mgr. Michael Zachař.

The name of the academic painter František Kaván is inherently linked to the history of Czech landscape painting and the renowned Mařák School at the Prague Academy. The artist is esteemed for his ability to deeply perceive the character of the Czech countryside and, through compelling brushwork, capture its atmospheric shifts, particularly in his native Krkonoše Mountains, the Vysočina region, and the Bohemian Paradise. This presented piece dates from the artist’s mature realist-impressionist period, a time when he resided in Libuň and undertook excursions to capture picturesque motifs near Jinolice and Ktová. Kaván remained faithful to a realist foundation throughout his life, and his winter landscapes, with their refined color palette, represent the pinnacle of his oeuvre, making him one of the most sought-after authors of 19th and 20th-century Czech art.
