Study of a Leafless Tree by the important Czech artist Antonín Mánes (1784–1843) is a pencil drawing on handmade paper. The work is framed and bears a label on the reverse confirming its former inclusion in the Waldes Collection (formed c. 1910–1938).

Leopold Stephan (1826–1890) was a prominent 19th-century Czech landscape painter. He trained at the Prague Academy and in Düsseldorf. His oeuvre encompasses romantic and picturesque landscapes of the Alps and the Czech lands, with the Šumava Mountains recurring as a favored subject. Drawings and sketches made directly from nature formed an integral part of his creative practice.
