Belle Époque brooch with diamonds and emeralds - 88,000 Kč

This Belle Époque-style brooch, crafted from 14k gold, dates from the early 20th century. The front is silver-plated and set with 59 natural rose cut diamonds. The striking color accents are provided by natural cabochon cut emeralds weighing 1.70 ct and 1.47 ct. It was stamped in Vienna with the Austro-Hungarian "fox" hallmark. The pin is fitted with a lock for safe wear.

The piece is designed to be worn as a statement piece, either as a brooch or a pendant, and therefore features a bail on the back through which a chain can be threaded. Given its age of over 100 years, the brooch remains in very good condition. Some stones are not perfectly symmetrically cut or have internal inclusions visible on the surface. These are not damages, merely minor cosmetic imperfections. One small diamond has a chipped edge measuring less than 1 mm.

In European (especially French) history, the Belle Époque ("beautiful era") refers to the period from around the 1880s to World War I—a time of general prosperity, peace, and innovation in the worlds of art, science, and technology. The finest available materials were used in jewelry making, most often gold and platinum combined with diamonds from new mines in southern Africa. These pieces typically have a luxurious appearance featuring neoclassical and neorococo motifs (lace patterns, leaves and scrolls, garlands, bows) that reference the styles of the French court in the 18th century. They often bear similar elements to Art Nouveau jewelry, as they were created during the same time period.

This sculptural brooch made of 14k yellow hollow gold (the pin is made of 480/1000 gold) features two natural cabochon cut amethysts. The goldsmith achieved different shades of color in the stones by backing them with colored foil. The C-clasp is functional. The pin is set high, so the brooch is ideal for attaching to thicker garment.

The jewelry dates back to the third quarter of the 19th century. Unmarked, the fineness of the metal is confirmed by a certificate from the Czech Assay Office.

Underlaying stones with metal foil was common practice not only for bohemian garnets, but also for other natural and paste stones.
