Glass cup - Biedermeier

nz.186.16.13
Spa cup with cut medallions from the spa environment made around 1840 in the Biedermeier period. It is clear glass with partly pink glazed. The medallions depict, for example, the Lawyer's Gate, Königstein or the bath house.

From the second half of the 18th century onwards, porcelain and glass spa cups were used for mineral treatments, which visitors either bought in local shops or borrowed from the spa houses. In addition to cups intended for the direct use of the spa waters, souvenir teacups and cups, most often decorated with engraved veduttes of spa towns, became widespread in the first half of the 19th century. Skilled engravers were active in all these towns and portrayed wealthy and noble visitors. From the cheap souvenir to the luxurious engraved cup, spa glass is one of the most typical examples of the Biedermeier style.
